We pay our respects to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across this vast country and to Māori, Pasifika, and all First Nations people who we warmly invite to APSAD 2026. This is Whadjuk country, where the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) meets the ocean, and stories of creation are carried on the sea breeze. Boorloo (Perth) is the longest city on the planet, a wide urban sprawl stretched along a coastline of brilliant white coral-sand beaches. From this city, our minds and hearts turn outward across the Wheat Belt plains, through great forests of the South West and along the rugged south coast, then up through the million square kilometres of the Western Deserts and into the red earth pindan of the Pilbara and the mangrove coasts and ancient stone country of the Kimberley. Western Australia spans more than a third of this continent. It holds stories across more than 80 Aboriginal language groups, each carrying deep cultural knowledge, law, and connection to Country that has sustained people for tens of thousands of years. This year’s conference theme, **Storytelling Shapes Us: Community, Clinical Practice, Research, and Healing**, foregrounds the critical role of interdisciplinary knowledge exchange in advancing alcohol and other drug (AOD) research, policy, and practice. The program emphasises methodological rigour, scientific integrity, and the translation of evidence into effective clinical and community outcomes. Within this framework, storytelling is positioned not as an alternative to science, but as a complementary mode of knowledge that can enhance the interpretation, communication, and application of evidence. This includes First Nations ways of knowing, being, and doing, which offer important contributions to culturally informed and contextually responsive research and practice. APSAD invites researchers, clinicians, policy-makers, and community practitioners to contribute to a program that prioritises high quality empirical research, critical scholarship, and innovative policy and practice responses. Alongside this, the conference will create space for lived and living experience to inform and strengthen evidence informed approaches. The conference remains firmly grounded in scientific excellence while fostering inclusive, respectful dialogue across diverse knowledge systems. In doing so, APSAD continues its commitment to advancing rigorous research and supporting its application in ways that are ethical, culturally responsive and impactful. Abstracts submitted by authors that have volunteered to be a mentor in the program will not automatically be accepted. The same applies for abstracts submitted by authors that were mentored by the program. For more details, please check the relevant Abstract Mentor Program information below. The program is especially targeted at First Peoples from resource-limited settings who lack access to opportunities for rigorous mentoring in research and writing. The aim of the Abstract Mentor Program is to increase the motivation of First Peoples as well as the number of abstract submissions received from First Peoples working in the area that may not be able to submit an abstract on their own or have the confidence to present at the conference.  The program is completely independent of the abstract review and selection process. We hope you walked away with new connections, were empowered by the conference and we hope to see you in Walyalup (Fremantle) in 2026. The APSAD Committee was comprised of APSAD members working across the alcohol and other drugs sector, including clinicians, nurses, researchers, and other professionals—in close collaboration with the First Nations Leadership Group. 2025 was the first time the conference has collaborated with a First Nations Leadership Group and this committee will be continued for future years. With over 25 years in the alcohol and other drug sector, Grace’s career reflects her commitment to bridging evidence and practice, delivering contemporary workforce development and designing innovative peer, treatment, and harm reduction initiatives throughout WA. A passion for overdose prevention, early warning systems, drug checking, and safer festival events powers her advocacy. Grace’s contributions have earned her recognition, including the Inaugural APSAD Advocacy Award in 2021, which celebrates her leadership in harm reduction. She brings warmth, creativity, and a hands-on approach to capacity building, always striving to foster safer, more connected communities in Western Australia. **National Drug Research Institute & enAble Institute, Curtin University** Dr Jodie Grigg is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the National Drug Research Institute (Curtin University, Perth) within the Harm Reduction Policy and Strategies Program. She has worked in the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector for almost 20 years, including around 15 years in research. While she has worked across a wide range of illicit drug projects, her work has primarily focused on drugs used in music and entertainment settings, and she is passionate about translating research into practical real-world responses that reduce harm and stigma. Jodie currently coordinates the WA arm of the Ecstasy and Related Drugs Reporting System (EDRS), part of the national Drug Trends program. Paul is CEO of Peer Based Harm Reduction WA (PBHR WA), Western Australia’s only peer-based consumer-led AOD service, which provides free health and harm reduction services for people who use drugs. Paul has worked at PBHR WA for >25 years, delivering and coordinating outreach services, overdose prevention, take-home-naloxone, and peer-education projects, while providing consultancy to researchers and policy makers and workforce development to other front-line agencies. Paul has previously worked as a Drug & Alcohol Officer for the State-wide Specialist Aboriginal Mental Health Service; an educator & consultant for the Transnational Institute (in China and Myanmar); and a trainer for the Burnet Institute. Paul is committed to addressing stigmatisation directed at, improving the health equity of, and promoting the fundamental human rights of, people who use drugs. In all his work Paul strives to bring the voices and living experience of people who use drugs to research, policy, and practice. Dr Stephen Bright is a psychologist who has worked in the AOD field for over 20 years. He is currently Senior Lecturer at Edith Cowan University where he oversees the teaching of the Addiction Studies major. Dr Bright is also WA Assistant Commissioner for AOD. Stephen is a strong advocate of harm reduction and an evidence-based approach to AOD legislation. He has published research on the intersect between new and emerging drugs and drug policy, older adults and AOD, drug checking and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies. Dr Bright established Australia’s first not-for-profit psychedelic research company, Psychedelic Research in Science & Medicine Ltd. He has since conducted clinical trials using MDMA and psilocybin to treat treatment refractory PTSD and depression, respectively. Given the recent changes to authorised prescribers’ scheme in Australia, Stephen now trains clinicians in the provision of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies and consultancy to prospective authorised prescribers.   Add your details to have the conference announcements delivered direct to your inbox. While it has been determined that on-demand/virtual registrations for APSAD 2026 will not be available, APSAD remains dedicated to increasing scholarship opportunities. These scholarships aim to assist individuals who may face barriers in attending the event in person.  The Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol & other Drugs (APSAD) is the Asia Pacific's leading multidisciplinary organisation for professionals involved in the alcohol and other drug field. APSAD is dedicated to increasing the profile of the issues related to the use of alcohol and other drugs, through the dissemination of information from the wide range of professions involved in this field. In addition, we strive to promote improved standards in clinical practice and in research into this and allied subjects. It also provides a network of drug and alcohol professionals in Australia and New Zealand. It is your responsibility to review these terms and conditions prior to the purchase of registrations. By purchasing registrations you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions. We reserve the right to amend these terms and conditions at any time and will provide the most recent version on our website. Payment or proof of payment must be made in order to receive registration confirmation. We encourage payment to be made at the time of registration to confirm your registration and attendance at any social events. The online form will allow payment by credit card (Visa or Mastercard only) or indication that payment will be by EFT/ bank transfer. Please note your registration is not guaranteed until payment is received. For registrations made within 21 days of the conference commencing, payment will be required by credit card online at the time of purchase to ensure payment is received before the delegate is onsite. Secure online credit card facilities provided by eWay. All payment options are outlined on the registration site and are included on the tax invoice. If you are paying by credit card, charges will appear on your statement as coming from “ASHM Surry Hills”. Payments are processed through our PCI compliant software and payment gateway eWay. CVV numbers are not stored with your credit card data. If paying by EFT you must accept the bank fees at your end (if applicable). We will not deem registrations as fully paid if we receive them less bank fees. Please note: ASHM's standard invoice payment terms are 14 days from date of issue. Your record of registration, hotel bookings and payment will be sent to you via email automatically upon completion of your registration. All prices are inclusive of Australian GST, APSAD member registration rates are not transferable to non-APSAD members. By selecting a member registration rate, you warrant that you are a current member of APSAD and that the registration is made in the APSAD member's name only. A breach of this may result in a cancellation of an event registration. As an alternative to cancellation, your registration may be transferred to another person without incurring any penalty. The Conference Secretariat must be advised of the transfer in writing. Please email the name, position, phone and email address of the new delegate to apsadconference(at)ashm.org.au. Registration cancellations and amendments must be notified in writing to the Secretariat. Cancellations or changes received before 30 days prior to the conference commencing will receive a refund less a 20% administration fee. Cancellations and amendments received in writing 29-0 days prior to the conference commencing will not receive any refund, if cancellation is for medical purposes we can assist with any documentation required for your insurance claim. If your request is due to reasons out of your control such as border closures and government restrictions preventing you from attending the conference, you must send your request in writing to apsadconference(at)ashm.org.au and provide proof for your request. After the deduction of a 30% administration fee the remaining cost will be refunded. No refunds will be provided for social function tickets within 30 days of the function commencing. Tickets can be transferred to another name. Sometimes our events are cancelled, varied, rescheduled, or postponed due to Force Majeure Events or other causes. In these terms and conditions, a “Force Majeure Event” means any of the following (whether or not foreseeable or anticipated): acts of God, terrorism, war, civil unrest, strike or labour dispute, lack of transportation, breakdown, labour or material shortage, blockade or embargo, supplier failure, epidemic or pandemic, government restriction or recommendation, legal requirement, extreme weather, earthquake, drought, fire, flood, explosion, natural disaster, and/or any other event, cause or circumstance that is beyond our reasonable control. In the event the conference cannot be held and is postponed due to events beyond the control of APSAD (incl. force majeure) or due to events which are not attributable to wrongful intent or gross negligence of APSAD, APSAD cannot be held liable by delegates for any damages, costs, or losses incurred, financial losses, etc. Under these circumstances, APSAD reserves the right to transfer the registration to the postponed conference. If you are unable to attend the new dates, you may, by notifying us no later than 30 days after the originally scheduled date of the postponed conference, obtain a refund for the registration cost less 30% admin fee. The admin fee will be used to cover costs already incurred for the organization of the conference and which could not be recovered from third parties. Notification: We will use reasonable endeavours to notify ticket holders of a cancellation, variation, rescheduling or postponement of an event by sending an email to the address provided to us by the ticket holder and putting a notice on our website; however the responsibility to ascertain whether an event has been cancelled, varied, rescheduled or postponed is yours. Sole remedy: Any refund will be your sole remedy for a postponement or cancellation of an event, and, to the extent permitted by law, APSAD will have no further liability to you in respect of any cancellation, variation, rescheduling or postponement of an event for any reason. In the event the conference cannot be held face-to-face and is amended to a virtual delivery due to events beyond the control of APSAD (incl. force majeure) or due to events which are not attributable to wrongful intent or gross negligence of APSAD, APSAD cannot be held liable by delegates for any damages, costs, or losses incurred, financial losses, etc. Under these circumstances, APSAD reserves the right to convert face to face registrations to virtual registrations. All registrations will be automatically changed to a virtual registration. A fee may be charged to your credit card in line with the hotel’s terms and conditions prior to arrival. Delegates are responsible for their own accommodation booking. Please ensure the hotel’s terms and conditions have been read before booking accommodation for any cancellation or no-show charges. Registration fees do not include insurance of any kind. It is strongly recommended that all delegates take out their own travel insurance and medical insurance prior to the conference. The policy should include loss of fees through cancellation of your participation in the Conference itself, loss of airfares for any reason, medical expenses and repatriation should travel arrangements have to be altered. In the event of industrial disruptions or natural disasters the APSAD cannot accept responsibility for any financial or other losses incurred by delegates. Nor can the Secretariat take responsibility for injury or damage to property or persons. Registered delegates are liable for any damages caused by the delegate to the conference venues, accommodations rooms, conference supplier equipment or conference organiser’s equipment. In registering for the conference the delegate agrees to indemnify the organiser for any damages caused by the delegate to any venue or equipment. To the extent permitted by law, we exclude all conditions and warranties relating to your purchase of tickets for and attendance at events. Where APSAD's liability cannot be excluded, such as in relation to Consumer Guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law or other prescribed terms under legislation, to the extent permitted by law, our liability for breach is limited to the face value of the ticket purchased by you, plus any relevant booking fees. You agree that if APSAD will not be able to perform its obligations under these terms and conditions and in relation to events to the extent such performance is affected by a Force Majeure Event. To the extent permitted by law we exclude all liability for consequential loss, which includes any indirect loss, loss of profit, loss of data or loss of reputation. Delegates who bring family members or friends that are under the age of 18 years to the conference venue, facilities or functions relating to the conference, are wholly responsible for that child / minor and must ensure that they are supervised at all times by a responsible adult. The conference and the conference organiser bear no responsibility. There may also be content presented, discussed or shown that is not suitable for children. In registering for the conference, delegates consent for APSAD, its agents and others working under its authority, to take and to have full and free use of video/photographs containing their image/ likeness taken at APSAD events and conferences. APSAD may only use these images for promotional, news, online/ multimedia, research and/or educational purposes by and for APSAD. Delegates agree that they are not entitled to remuneration, residuals, royalties or any other payment from APSAD in respect of their image/likeness or its use. Delegates release, discharge, and hold harmless, APSAD and its agents from any and all claims, demands or causes of actions that they may hereafter have by reason of anything contained in the photographs or video. Should a delegate not agree to the above image release, they must advise APSAD by contacting apsadconference(at)ashm.org.au. Some speakers may agree to share their presentation slides and webcasts (where available) with delegates only. This content is not intended for wider distribution – sharing, broadcasting and/or copying of this content is not permitted according to Australia’s intellectual property laws. APSAD along with ASHM Conference & Events Division implements a waste-reduction policy that addresses Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Our aim is to research and prioritise purchasing items and equipment that support the use of recycled materials or can be recycled after use. APSAD no longer provides a conference handbook and instead provides reduced copies of the Conference Program. Our conference app already captures all of the content that is included in the traditional handbook and in addition provides delegates the functionality to connect with each other, participate in live polls and conduct session Q&A. We use PET lanyards, lanyards for all ASHM run conferences. PET offers a number of advantages. It takes less energy to manufacture than alternatives. It’s also extremely light, strong and durable, meaning less packaging is needed to protect our products. Lighter packaging means that less fuel is needed for transportation, which lowers carbon emissions. In fact, PET bottles have been getting lighter and lighter, weighing 40% less than they did in the year 2000. Almost uniquely among plastics, PET is near-infinitely recyclable and because it can be made into new products, this lowers the need for fresh PET to be made, further reducing emissions. Scholarship applications will open in March and the deadline for submission is 27 April 2026. Applicants will be notified of the outcome in August. While it has been determined that on-demand/virtual registrations for APSAD 2026 will not be available, APSAD remains dedicated to increasing scholarship opportunities. These scholarships aim to assist individuals who may face barriers in attending the event in person. Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Māori, and/or Pasifika people working in the alcohol and other drugs field, and employees/volunteers of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations.
