Hobart - Tasmania’s capital.
Hobart is packed with culture, spirit and extraordinary diversity: beaches and rainforests, museums and theatres, glorious gardens, gourmet outlets, and convict landmarks that echo the stories of settlement balanced with a modern lifestyle.
This is a destination where you can easily connect with place and people. At its heart is the deservingly famous Salamanca Place, a precinct that captures the soul of the city. Here, you can meet and mingle with the island’s artists, authors, gourmands, wood designers, politicians, winemakers, locals and other visitors.
For most, the experience starts with the weekly ritual at the iconic Salamanca Market, staged on Saturdays between the stretch of converted historic sandstone warehouses and clutches of oak trees. Browse more than 250 stalls for an endless collection of Tasmanian-made and inspired woodwork, produce, fashion and crafts.
On any day, the waterfront location is enticing and thriving. Antarctic research ships, yachts and dawn kayakers create a calmness against the movement of cafés and the start of the day’s trade. Along the shoreline, fishermen on trawlers unload deep sea feasts of oysters, rock lobster and abalone for national and international markets and local restaurants.
Hobart’s ability to provide produce fresh from the sea and fields is seeing the city experience a food renaissance. A new era of exciting and experimental gourmet outlets is appearing on this already renowned epicurean trail.
But Hobart’s greatest asset is its landscape. No other Australian capital has a skyline quite like it with Mt Wellington as the backdrop. Formed during the Jurassic period, when Tasmania separated from Antarctica, Mt Wellington attracts hikers, cyclists, walkers, rockclimbers and sightseers on independent and guided tours.
Hobart is a fantastic base from which to explore the many treasures of Tasmania. So allow enough time to linger longer and enjoy all the Hobart and Tasmania has to offer.
